Here we are at the beginning of a new video card era. This era looks to bring us as large of a change as AGP did when it was first released. We made the jump from PCI to AGP and now it appears that we’re heading back to PCI, or at least a new PCI variant. PCI Express (PCI-E) promises more bandwidth than AGP could ever dream of but we’ll have to wait and see; nothing on the market today can take advantage of PCI-E’s bandwidth. I’m sure in the very near future we’ll see cards that start to sneak into the extra bandwidth but it will be some time before we are maxing PCI-E out.
When PCI-E was first released, it was Intel that had the boards ready to go. AMD followed suit a few months later thanks to the nVidia nForce4 chipset. Now VIA has released their updated KT chipset which also takes advantage of PCI-E. No matter what flavor you prefer, PCI-E has already taken over. I’m thrilled to see the manufacturer’s keeping up with demand, however the high-end video cards are all but impossible to come by. For the majority of readers, the mid-range cards are quite prevalent and this is where the Leadtek PX6600GT TDH falls; right smack in the middle of the mid-range. Lucky for us, the new format is not being promoted as the format for the rich but simply a new format. Both motherboards and video cards can be found for more than reasonable prices. |
