At GruntvillE people talk about all kinds of hardware, and brag like the hot rodders of the 50’s and 60’s about how fast their CPU is, or how much storage space, and so on. However, not many people discuss the optical drive. Sure some brag about having a DVD burner when you have only a CD burner, but few people differentiate the brand or model of the drive. Some people think that all optical drives are pretty much the same, which of course is not true. The true enthusiasts know that there are a handful of brands that stand head and shoulders above the rest when it comes to product performance and quality. Today we take a look at the mainstream burner from Plextor.
For those of you unfamiliar with Plextor, let’s take a look at the history. Plextor Corporation is a division of the Japanese corporation Shinano Kenshi, which was formed in 1918 in Nagano. In 1985 they founded TEXEL Corporation in Tokyo and TEXEL America in Sunnyvale, CA. In 1994 TEXEL America was renamed to Plextor Corporation. The first CD-ROM drives introduced were in 1989 under the brand name TEXEL. CD-RW drives were introduced in 1998 and the DVD+R/RW in 2003. Today Plextor Corporation in Freemont, CA is 4,000 employees strong and has annual sales of $557 million US. |
