The packaging itself is pretty basic, just your typical plastic clamshell that opens with ease from the top. The front consists primarily of the OCZ logo and the back is just a rundown of some popular quotes and awards they've received from various review websites. If you're looking for any type of information pertaining to the memory performance, you'll have to zoom in on the white sticker attached to the modules as it's the only place where it's printed. |
So what lies behind that flashy exterior? After some slow, patient work to remove the heatspreaders, making sure as to not scratch them, I was finally able to pry them off and take a closer look at the heart of these modules. Unfortunately, all that I found was a blank slate staring back at me. As you can see below, the actual memory chips are blank. Worry not, this is actually common among OCZ's memory line and is nothing to worry about as they are very open their sources and the chips used. In terms of the VX line, they're still powered by Winbond, maker of the infamous BH5 line of memory chips, and likely the CH5 series. |
As far as specifications, features, etc., that OCZ offers in the package, here's a quick rundown of a few of them:
-
400MHz DDR1
-
184pin DIMM
-
CL 2-3-3-8 at 2.6V
-
CL 2-2-2-8 at 3.2V (CAS-TRCD-TRP-TRAS)
-
Unbuffered
-
Gold mirrored Copper Heatspreader
-
Lifetime Warranty
-
EVP® - A feature that allows performance enthusiasts to use a VDIMM of 3.5V ± 5%without invalidating the OCZ Lifetime Warranty.
-
ULN2 (Ultra Low Noise) technology which uses various printed circuit board (PCB) techniques to reduce the amount of electrical noise that is present in all high-speed ICs. This results in faster and more stable memory
One tidbit of information that I'd like to point out that some may overlook is listed at the bottom of the product page is OCZ's notice that the “ VX series is not recommended for use on legacy nForce 2 platforms.” That's not to say they won't work for you, I've seen several postings from folks running them without issue, but it's something you should keep in mind before purchasing if you're running on that platform.
