Until recently, the Power Supply was a bold statement of complacency. The offerings were slim and almost all were bland; offering color options of gray or gray. PSU’s have come a long way over the past year or two. Many manufacturers have entered the high-end line and given all of us a little more to consider when shopping. The end results were all fairly similar though, or appeared to be. Once the review sites decided they weren’t scared of the “Void if Removed” sticker, they started pointing out flaws in design and actually measuring the PSU’s competency. Many of the manufacturers went back to the drawing board to make sure their products performed as well as they looked. Due to the review sites getting more thorough, you now have a large variety of mods and colors along with sizes to choose from.

Overclocking and Modding have turned yet another product from bland to grand. 550watt PSU’s were almost unheard of a couple years ago unless you had the big bucks and were running a dual CPU server and even then they were difficult to find. These days you can find a 500 watt or larger PSU from most of the manufacturers in the market. Antec has been a major player in the PSU market for awhile now and has been a favorite among enthusiasts for sometime. Antec releases quite a few new products each year. What impresses me most is that they develop NEW products. They don’t just change an old one a little and call it new. Take the TrueControl 550 we’re looking at today.

Antec has offered the TruePower 550 for a couple years now. The TrueControl offers a whole new concept for PSU’s. It allows the user to individually control three separate rails of power; 3.3v, 5v and 12v. You may be wondering what in the world good this will do for you, but that’s what I’m here for. For more info on the TruePower 550 that this PSU is based on, I highly recommend you take a peek at the incredible review Bellerophon wrote on it. I’ll be referring to items that you’ll find detailed descriptions of in his write up. Here’s the link to the Antec TruePower 550.
