Introduction

A very common question that the more experienced case modders get when people see their work is “How the hell did you do that?” This is usually accompanied by some gawking, pointing, and even drooling. For most of us the answer is “Well, I just took my <insert tool name here> and went to it.” When you get two experienced people like say, mashie and Crimson Sky, discussing mods it could sound Greek to the n00bs. So the staff at GruntvillE has decided to put together a multi-part “How to” about modding tools. We figure it will cut down on how many times someone has to explain what a Dremel is in the forums and give everyone a shopping list for their next trip to the hardware store.

Now, this list is in no way exhaustive. There are literally thousands of tools out there with all kinds of specialized uses that may come in handy while doing your particular mod project. We are just trying to hit the major tools that are the most common, and for the most part, must have tools.

In an effort to keep this somewhat organized we will break the tools up into the following sections:

•  Basic Tools: The stuff that everyone should have.
•  Cutting Tools: Duh! Tools to cut the holes in your case!
•  Finishing Tools: Let's get rid of those rough edges.

In future articles we will cover the following tools in detail:

•  Painting Tools: How to get a mirror finish, every time.
•  Electrical Tools: For those who want to dig deeper.

We will start off with a brief discussion of brands, particularly for the power tools. Keep in mind that any recommendations for a particular brand of tool are just that, a recommendation, and it is based upon the writer's opinion, not an in-depth testing.
